World News@lemmy.world•The torture video shaking Israel to its coreEnglish
6·21 hours agoI don’t think it’s religion so much as the combination of religion with a national identity.
It’s odd to see so many conservatives become rabid defenders of Israel since October 7th, considering there is also a pretty blatant history of antisemitism within the conservative movement in the U.S., especially the Catholic far right.
I’ve never really understood how people can just ignore all the antisemitism present during Trump’s first term. Refusing to denounce neo Nazis or a rally of young men with torches literally chanting “Jews will not replace us,” then accusing anyone that even questions what Israel has done in Gaza of being antisemitic, (seriously wtf?). But, it just kind of hit me that this has very likely been a strategic choice by the new right, along with the sudden embrace of “Christianity” by much of silicon valley.
They see what Israel has accomplished by tying religious identity to patriotism and nationality. It creates a practically impenetrable shield for any accountability. Now the right is trying to re-write the history of the U.S. as a “Christian” nation, not because they give a fuck about religion, but because they want that same shield.
We’re all supposed to believe that everything they create in their man made agenda is somehow carrying out the will of God. Therefore, anyone questioning the men “carrying out the will of God,” are also questioning God. Questioning the U.S. under their leadership means you’re attacking the U.S., questioning God’s will (since we’re now supposed to believe it’s always been a “Christian” nation), and also somehow attacking the entire religion.
They don’t give a fuck about Christ. They don’t give a fuck about Israel. They just want to insulate themselves against the rest of the world in the same model of circular logic. If they succeed, Christian Nationalism for the U.S. accomplishes what Zionism has accomplished for Israel.

politics @lemmy.world•Judges Order Trump to Pay for SNAP, Killing His Shutdown Strategy
31·4 days agoSorry, but that attitude is exactly why they keep gaining ground. That argument is propaganda that JD Vance and Adrian Vermule (the modern Carl Schmitt who is fucking obsessed with the OG Carl Schmitt) have been trying to promote for quite some time.
First it was JD Vance claiming that judges don’t have the authority to overrule a president’s executive authority. It’s not that JD Vance graduated from Yale without ever learning about checks and balances. It’s that he went on TV, and used his position of authority to state a lie that this administration needs to be true. When judges kept overruling Trump and using the legal system to undo much of the shit that he did, it back peddled to well he’s just going to take it to the supreme court anyway.
While that’s true, it’s turned into the Trump administration being bogged down with hundreds of lawsuits. While the supreme court is corrupt as fuck, it takes time for them to actually hear cases and make a decision. So claiming that judges and congress don’t still act as speed bumps to Trump’s evil plans is frankly bullshit.
If we can make it another year and prevent him from cancelling or rigging the elections, then we can take the house back and begin actually investigating some of this bullshit. This time next year the propaganda will be back to the standard: Your vote doesn’t really count, or why bother voting because both sides are the same. Just ignore the fact that some people are willing to work very hard and dump millions into propaganda campaigns discouraging voting, and rigging the law to make sure voting is made as difficult as possible.

politics @lemmy.world•Judges Order Trump to Pay for SNAP, Killing His Shutdown Strategy
392·4 days agoHitler literally got a law passed so that a judge couldn’t block him from doing anything. So until Trump has his Reischtag fire and declares a state of emergency it’s not really comparable.
Passed shortly after Hitler became Chancellor, the Act effectively transferred significant legislative authority from the Reichstag (the German parliament) to Hitler and his cabinet, allowing them to enact laws without parliamentary consent. The Act also permitted amendments to the constitution and control over the national budget. Despite its ostensibly reassuring language regarding the roles of the president and parliament, the Enabling Act fundamentally undermined democratic governance in Germany.

Technology@lemmy.world•An ex-Intel CEO’s mission to build a Christian AI: ‘hasten the coming of Christ’s return’English
1·8 days agoI have a problem with these people exploiting and weaponizing my religion for their own profit. Not that they’re the first to do it, but it’s even more ridiculous to grow up and see the hypocritical “traditionalists” joining forces with hypocritical technocrats.
Fight for your “traditional” values and force them on anyone you disagree with. Put all your faith in the middlemen “chosen by God to lead” all of his creations, act on “God’s behalf,” and tell everyone else what is or isn’t “God’s will.” Insist on diving headfirst into the most cutting edge unregulated dystopian tech, while accusing anyone who questions your hubris of being a luddite.
Meanwhile, base all social and legal policies on your very literal interpretation of parts of a book that often contradicts itself, was written thousands of years ago, and has been edited multiple times throughout history by power hungry men very similar to yourself. Accuse anyone who questions this of persecuting you because of your religion.
Pick and choose random parts of that book to fit your narrative and justify your actions as a “Warrior for Christ.” Very rarely (if ever) will the parts chosen be any of the stuff Christ actually said, but if anyone points that out, just DARVO and accuse them of religious persecution or “toxic empathy.” Feed only your cherry picked bullshit into your biased AI. Congratulations, you’ve created an easy button for blasphemy.

3·9 days agoI’m not sure, but that’s a good question.
I believe Ukraine used Palantir against Russia, but when the U.S. becomes involved in a proxy war (even if it’s to defend a nation that was clearly invaded by a leader who posed a global threat) it’s hard to know what is actually chosen by the country vs provided as is.

8·9 days agoWorst case, it’s sold to ICE or some other fascist regime.
Every single government that has a contract with Palantir for Gotham or even whatever the fuck they’re doing with the UK NHS data, is reason enough to know this kind of shit is a bad idea. The entire existence of Palantir makes this kind of shit a bad idea by default.
Even if they’re not using lavender or where’s daddy (yet), I do not want them to have a detailed layout of my home, in addition to all the other information already being collected.
If the day comes when any government needs to crush civil unrest, Palantir gives them an easy button to weaponize your data against you.

“I reversed the script change and rebooted the device,” he wrote. “It came back to life instantly. They hadn’t merely incorporated a remote control feature. They had used it to permanently disable my device.”
In short, he said, the company that made the device had “the power to remotely disable devices, and used it against me for blocking their data collection… Whether it was intentional punishment or automated enforcement of ‘compliance,’ the result was the same: a consumer device had turned on its owner.”

politics @lemmy.world•Analyst says Trump officials may flee if Democrats win midterms: 'Would not be surprising'
141·10 days agoI really dislike Nancy Pelosi, but she actually did a lot to intervene when Dems took the House back during Trump’s first administration.
Democrats to use House majority to launch Trump investigations
It doesn’t get talked about enough, but Trump had plans to profit greatly from COVID and vaccine privatization. He likely would have been successful if he’d been able to roll out the vaccine without democratic oversight.
He had a lot of evil plans actually, and I’m pretty sure that most of his backlash against the vaccine and COVID mandates was mainly due to him being angry he wasn’t allowed to profit from the pandemic in as many ways as he hoped.
Before the pandemic, top contractor received billions from government

Emergent BioSolutions was awarded a $628 million federal contract with no competitive bidding. Top executives received big bonuses while factories mostly sat idle and tens of millions of Covid-19 doses were thrown away.

18·10 days agoI mean shit, that would be the wise thing to do. I probably would too if I was worried about investigations into all the war crimes I committed, all the rights I violated, all the documented abuse and negligence, and all the humans that have died or gone missing in their fucking detention centers. Not to mention all the money they’ve clearly stolen, and contracts they’ve violated.
I was actually thinking that’s probably the real reason Stephen Miller sold his house rather than he was threatened bc “radical leftists” wrote mean messages in chalk on his sidewalk.

I feel for Velma. I am so bad at math that sometimes I go into a corner by myself so I can hide what I’m working on from my coworkers while I scribble down very complex maladaptive strategies I’ve learned to solve simple calculations.

15·13 days agoSo about those government contracts for immigration, you would think some of those states that raked in a lot of money, could perhaps use that ill-gotten money to at least benefit the residents of their states.
Funny that Florida got more than half a billion dollars from the government the day before the shutdown, but they just can’t find it within their hearts or their budget to use any of that money to feed families relying on food stamps in their state. Wonder where it’s going instead?

19·15 days agoSeriously, the party of projection calling the No Kings Rally the Hate America rally while they destroy our country and rub it in our faces. Yet, somehow there is still a solid chunk of America (at least 30%) that acts like they just can’t decipher whatever Lassie is trying to tell them.
I would guess less than half of that 30% are just pretending because they also hate America/are still on board with this Butterfly revolution bullshit. They are ready to tear it all down and rebuild it because in their unhinged imagination, serving the leader of a patriarchal monarchy run by back stabbing narcissists incapable of admitting fault regardless of how absurd they sound, is a utopia. They either can’t fathom a dystopian world under constant surveillance, and shitty AI not capable of replacing doctors, scientists, and engineers, or they haven’t thought that far ahead, and should probably watch Idiocracy to get a glimpse of their future.
The other half probably understands most of what Lassie is saying on some level, but their denial is a coping mechanism. Either way, we can’t wait around for that 15-30% of America to come to their senses pull their heads out of their asses. At this point, if somebody refuses to acknowledge reality, there’s no point in arguing with a brick wall. All you can do is state reality, and refuse to let them rile you up or gaslight you.

Glass houses, sir.
