I literally did that one winter when I lived in a small studio and I had a particularly fancy salvaged HP workstation. It was great!

Although I’ll admit my favorite parts are the mustard BBQ sauce and the hammock garden, agreed that the BBQ is meh. And having known lots of country folks, evading taxes by only taking cash sounds about right.

Interesting, interesting. We call the female lightning bugs here glow worms because they are wingless, but today I’m learning that is not the case for all species!

I grew up calling them lightning bugs, and I’m so excited to see a thread full of people calling them the same!
I remember once opening the door to a garage (with a gravel floor), hundreds of the little guys immediately dove in to the gravel. It was… fine. I was… fine.
Conversely, I was at a snake petting zoo and they had an arachnid room. There was a big ol’ scorpion there covered with it’s babies taking a ride and it was honestly very cute! (This was thousands of miles from home, so that helped too.)
In summary: Scorpions… sometimes?

Agreed, it’s definitely coming from the top! I didn’t realize they had closed a ton of the other offices during the pandemic, but I suppose it’s not surprising either. It also seemed like a lot of remote hiring happened during the pandemic?
Most of the people I know personally affected are in that category (remotely hired or relocated), and most of those people are women. Small sample size with lots of bias, but I’ve been pretty upset the whole situation. It definitely feels/looks like a way to quietly push a bunch of folks out… whether overtly or as a “bonus” for upper management, it has the same unfortunate effect.
I guess it is what it is, but what it is ain’t good. It feels good to commiserate though, thank you stranger!
