Most of those occured after mainstream reporting. Usually it goes like this, some weird trend happens online, some real, some ironic, some making fun of said trend as if they were real, mainstream media picks up the story and signal boosts to the rest of the country, teens see the trend on clips of the news story and copies it, boom sudden epidemic of said trend. These trends, or memes suddenly propogate with great effect, not unlike a biological spread really.

Back in the day, how we used to do it is we’d play through the story solo and join up cooperatively in the gathering hub for the gathering hub quests. It was pretty seamless since we used ad-hoc connections so we’d be directly connected to each other. We never did use internet since we’d always play together in the same room/classroom.

I have a funny story about this actually. I used to work in those help lines for teenagers in the early oughts. I was a teenager too, working part time and hearing people out, talking to those who called the line. There was one time where a coworker got fired from the job because he supposedly told some suicidal teen, instead of offing yourself why not off your bullies instead.
Suicide is big business. There’s infrastructure readily available to reap financial rewards from the activity, atleast in the US.
