  • I’m nearing the end of Changes by Jim Butcher, and since I didn’t really like the following book all that much I thought I’d take a break to finally read the Lord of the Rings series. I got a nice clothbound set of them to match The Hobbit I already had (though for some infuriating reason The Hobbit is half a centimetre taller) and I grabbed The Silmarillion this morning in the same style. I’ll probably never get around to reading that one but my gf is way into these and she’s wanted it for ages.

Edit, pic because they’re really nice

  • Set your alarm for the exact time you need to get up and get out of bed when it goes off.

When I was younger I forced this by putting the clock out of reach, I had to physically get out of bed to turn it off. I don’t need to do it any more but it was a very good habit to get into.

  • I’ll take longer shifts with 7 days off per fortnight over normal ones with only weekends off any day. I rarely change my sleep schedule, I just stay nocturnal most of the time. I pop to the shops on my break most shifts to grab a backpack load of groceries, then there’s a 24h one near my apartment if I need anything that can’t wait on nights off. I spend my “mornings” with my girlfriend until she goes to bed around lunchtime, then I have the rest of my time to myself. It works for me, and has been for the last 8 years 🤷‍♂️

  • Security, and I would kill for a couple of hours to myself each day. By the time I get home, I have about half an hour to get to sleep if I want a full 8h down before the next shift. I work 2-3 nights, then get 2-3 off, so it averages out to 7 shifts a fortnight which isn’t so bad.

  • What a terrible article. 4 people are mentioned, yet it only says how one of them is doing (51% ROI). The first guy is just making “profit” which doesn’t tell us anything, the second girl is investing 10x as much as she was 4 years ago, which doesn’t necessarily mean she’s making a significant amount, just that it’s been steady enough that she’s comfortable with it, then there isn’t any information at all about the last guy. I can’t say these “Serious Stock Market Gains” are very impressive if the author won’t even say what they are. The article barely mentions AI so the headline is bullshit too. The part about a 14 year old working at Taco Bell and “pouring” his paychecks into fucking Palantir is nice and horrifying though, so I’m not saying the article doesn’t fit here.
