World News@lemmy.world•Canadian politician resigns from his seat to allow defeated Conservative leader Poilievre to enter ParliamentEnglish
172·6 months agoI wish people would stop calling him a populist. Doug Ford is a populist. PP is pretending to be a populist and is, at best an ideological populist but populists pivot. He doesn’t. We should be referring to him as an Opportunist because it all looks like an act to me.

9·6 months agoIf the parties don’t see even marginal gains in a region they won’t bother putting resources towards increasing that growth and eventually flipping a seat.
If we ever get away from first past the post they also need to see that it would benefit them to have second place.
It’s important to vote regardless of the outcome.

Maybe you should educate them about history and then there can be a move towards reconciliation that’s helps reduce racial violence?

WTF
Your statement is only accurate if tire exclusively talking about the food being imported. American fertilizer ingredients and a lot of the equipment (or materials for the equipment) come from Canada and other countries hit by the tariffs. There was an article a month ago about how the Vermont maple syrup industry is totally screwed because all their equipment comes from Canada.

6·7 months agoThe auction Hudson’s Bay is pursuing with Heffel Gallery Ltd. allows items to be removed from the process if they are found to be owned by others or have historical or cultural significance that make them inappropriate for a sale.
So it can be protected and blocked for auction?

Canada@lemmy.ca•This election was supposed to be about restoring hope for young Canadians. What happened?
171·7 months agoThere was someone on CBC Radio discussing this yesterday and they pointed heavily to how effectively conservative talking points are being pushed online by young social media influencers. Some unrelated research has shown that the beginning and end of a lot of political information younger people are receiving is on social media. Heck, I saw one article discussing how a lot of young people go to TikTok first when they want to learn how to fix something. What a stupid resource to go to for something like that, so if people are trying to figure out how to change a tire on TikTok they’re certainly also going there for their political information.
The seemingly obvious answer is that the other parties should be working more heavily on putting out counter messaging on these channels, but the way the algorithms work these people won’t even see the content because the algorithm ignores it and only provides further polarization of ideas.

World News@lemmy.world•Mexico bans ‘foreign propaganda’ after US anti-migrant adEnglish
4·7 months agoThe article that is linked (which is not much of an article) has translated the original source poorly. It’s being blocked because content on it was deemed discriminatory (not that it’s propaganda).

In many (if not most) sectors the Canadians have already seen a substantial switch to exporting to other regions. That’s why they have not seen a substantive decrease in exports despite the US tariffs. There are several sectors that are being held back because of other trade issues that the government has the ability to resolve and they’ve already been making friendly with several countries they were already having a variety of trade or political conflicts with under the previous government (China/India for instance). So the current administration absolutely has the power to help with this shift, which is economically wise.
