The most dangerous meats are ones originating from wild animals. Eg there are all sorts of nasty parasite cysts in wild boar meat. Nature is brutal and there is no such thing as “clean” meat from wild animals. Human inability to deal with this and becoming severely sick without thoroughly cooking the wild meat is evidence that even if we technically are somewhere on omnivore spectrum, we’re not really good omnivores—certainly not as good as bears or even boars. Honestly, eating insects, honey and eggs in addition to plants (fruit specifically) seems more like what we’re evolved to do.

Velcro, or maybe Van Der Waals force, or maybe whatever the hell makes gauge blocks stick to each other.
Seems like that Jamaican town has some…

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Millionaire tries to prove becoming wealthy is easy by becoming homeless and making a million in a year - and of course fails miserably and quits, citing reality
3·2 years agoHey, it works in video games—just loot some lvl 1 dungeon or take pickaxe to a rock, then sell the stuffz at the local shopkeeper! You’ll start small, but make thousands of gold in no time! Why wouldn’t it work in real life, too? Just get some stuffz and sell it for profit, you lazy bum!
/s in case it isn’t obvious

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Older patient gamers: what is your preferred gaming platform?
46·2 years agoPC. Because:
- Better controller support—I’m not limited to what MS or Sony deem as “certified” or “authorized” hardware. Most of the really good hardware (VKB, Virpil, Arduino) will never be available for consoles and what little is available is bad at best.
- Best sims are PC only (DCS, Il-2, E:D, X series, Hunternet etc)
- Sims support 3rd party auxiliary software (TacView, EDDiscovery, OMH, EDMC etc) for better experience and that’s simply not going to be possible on consoles, ever.
- For other games, modding experience on PC is simply better. SKSE and ENB is what keeps Skyrim going and makes it still relevant 13 years later. Can’t have this kind of code injection and wrappers on consoles.
- If I ever get into retrogaming, emulation is the way, especially since actually acquiring retro console games in their original physical format is bound to become a very expensive collector’s hobby if you don’t have your own collection from childhood already or don’t have local second-hand options.

172·2 years agoVortex is not a launcher, it’s a mod manager. And you don’t have to use it, there are alternatives. But you should use a mod manager, manual installation/uninstallation is really bad practice that can and will break things.

101·2 years agoThis is good. Modding can turn into the deepest dependency hell ever and not having access to a specific version of mod A can make mod B that you really love unusable. See: Skyrim VR and Unofficial Patch.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•In the Dune universe, why not use laser weapons as bombs?
6·2 years agoSimply nuking the shit out of everything wouldn’t really make for an interesting story.
It did for the Killing Star. Not nukes, but R-bombs which are probably the most insane WMD-s and unlike strangelet bombs actually feasible even at our current tech level. All you need is a light-sail and a big-ass solar-powered laser.
But, yeah, for dune:
- Drop an active shield generator on your enemy position
- Shoot it with a laser
- Hilarity ensues

Apple@lemmy.world•Apple Vision Pro Customer Interest Dying Down at Some Retail Stores
121·2 years agoPrecisely. Headsets for simracing, flight sims or any other immersive entertainment—yay! Headset for an everyday task (recipes while cooking, weather display or whatever) that could as well be solved with putting a phone or a tablet on a stand on your table—why? And it gets worse if there are multiple persons who’d want to use that information display.
Only use case I could imagine is having a huge high res virtual screen for productivity while travelling. But the Apple Vision is way overengineered for just that. For immersive entertainment I’d rather have Varjo for the price.
VKB. Their configuration software is intimidating at first glance (and you better RTFM!), but it’s super powerful and allows you to change and tune absolutely everything. Plus the settings are stored in the device so you only need to run the configurator when you want to change something. This is what you get when engineers run the company, not marketing, and they respect the end user’s intelligence.
Aside from certain mice, office keyboards and video conferencing stuff, Logitech is trash. Especially when it comes to flight sim and simracing hardware.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple keeps flogging 8GB of RAM for its Mac computers but it's still a dead horse
8·2 years agoAt these prices I’d expect at least 32 GB of RAM. 8 GB is for entry level phones and SOHO 2 to 4 bay NAS boxes.
Like Skyrim this one is far more playable in third person, and I really recommend giving that a try.
Haven’t played FO, but hell, no, Skyrim (and Morrowind, and Oblivion) in 3rd person is janky AF. Bethesda games never were meant to be played in 3rd person—I suspect the option is there simply for vanity cam, screenshots and modding.

Yeah, you need a DNA test to ID someone who’s gone through a turbofan. I’ve seen pics of an aftemath of such incident. You can’t even tell the species from remains that have the consistency of tomato juice.
