Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What fictional character do you wish was real?

Lovely looking pie! I’ve been doing cast iron pizzas for some time now. You can cut your cooking time down by 10-15 min if you do the following:
Start cooking on stove: burner on high for ~4-5 min to set the dough. When you first turn the burner on, also turn on the broiler.
Toss it under the broiler for another ~5min or until your cheese crisps up just the way you like it.
The higher heat of the stove and broiler (even though it’s not at the same time) mimics the super hot pizza ovens a bit better (imo).
The Ethiopian alphabet (abougida) has this feature, but it goes one step further. Every vowel consonant pair (aka every syllable) has it’s own symbol. That sounds like a lot of symbols, and it is, but the beauty of it is that the vowel sounds are just modifiers of the consonant. So you only have to memorize the consonant symbols and the modifiers and you can reduce drastically reduce the number of letters needed plus have a completely phonetic writing system.
Plus, probably still required to do military service, only you get no armor and face knights in full plate who have trained their whole lives to kill you.
OMG yes! Harry Potter makes the best curry sauce!

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•What is the result of a programmer's work?
12·30 days agoRobotics (or more broadly mechatronics) is a super interesting field. To do the work at the mechanical/electrical interface is really hard.
The field of industrial controls skips the hard part and just buys stuff that is pre-designed to move. Then those pre-designed pieces are made to fit and work together. It’s like complicated Legos and is honestly very fun and rewarding.
If you want to do programming with a physical result, controls engineering is a great option. I would recommend shooting for the hard stuff (real programming - DSP, FPGA, etc) knowing you’ve got a safe fallback with industrial controls (PLC programming).
Chaff is responsible for all the faults in society. We need a wheats only country.
Bay leaves add nothing: change my mind.
I even made bay leaf tea one time to isolate the flavor; nothing. Bay leaves are a hoax.
RIP Asherah. #neverforget
I think you’ll get your wish rather soon.

1·1 month agoI don’t think so. The main reason Facebook is so bad is it’s engagement algorithm. It is designed to maximize user engagement to sell adds, and it does that by putting outrage inspiring posts in front of users so that they have an emotional response and stay engaged. Using a human voting system instead of an outrage algorithm to determine what content people is exactly why I enjoy this platform over the other social media platforms.
Is there still rage bait here? Of course! Is it systematically shoved down your throat? No.

1·1 month agoI was assuming you’d make an account with the ID for the govt instance and use anonymous accounts for all other browsing. At least that’s what I would do.

4·1 month agoI believe there is existing precedent from SCOTUS that official government Twitter accounts were not allowed to block citizens accounts due to it being a ‘public square’. So that was a govt official taking the action of silencing someone’s ability to respond to them on social media protected by 1A. If the PLATFORM had blocked that user it would have been perfectly valid, since the GOVT did not silence a citizen’s speech.
I believe having the govt run the instance would make the entire forum subject to 1A in a way current social media is not. Would love a constitutional scholar to chime in, but that’s my argument.

3·1 month agoI also don’t get the impression there is a large bot presence here today. I do think if the platform was used as a normal communication network between constituient and representative it would probably become a target for foreign and domestic bots.
Onewheels are so much fun.

And price controls have a pretty terrible track record of providing a net benefit.
