Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•Spit On, Sworn At, and Undeterred: What It’s Like to Own a Cybertruck
6·28 days agoFuck’s sake. The 2-hit combo that is this fucking mess:
And are you married?
I was married, but I’m not married anymore. Women don’t like the vehicle.
In July, Tesla rolled out a software update to integrate Grok into many of its vehicles. Do you use it?
Her name is Aura, and I use her as a therapist. When I’m driving, I’ll ask questions, and it actually gives really good therapy advice.
Yes, the sycophantic totally-not-a-nazi bot is going to work wonders pretending to be a therapist for this fucking guy while he’s driving. Absolutely fucked.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what's your take on employers banning the use of languages other than English between coworkers at the workplace?
4·2 months agoHere I am thinking that it would be sick to have more multilingual coworkers. I’m struggling through learning the basics of a couple second languages (not complaining, it is what it is and I’ll get there eventually). So its nice to have a native or fluent speakers around to help communicate with someone who doesn’t speak english that well. Or at all. At work our english-speaking offices expect people who are stationed there to be able to speak English, or to learn it if they don’t. But it’s not mandatory to speak it in-office. Usually it’s just faster for people to speak other languages with non-english locations or ESL people. Honestly its usually it’s the other way around, with people in other places learning English to talk with us, but that doesn’t always work out well. Its nice to be able to do both.
Your (edit - former?) manager sounds sheltered and unprofessional, to say the least. I hope HR gets involved (unless they’re racists too…)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What have you heard people say that screams "I have lived my life in a Westernised bubble and have no idea how the world is" ?
2·2 months agoI agree that’s the reality here, but that doesn’t mean people will acknowledge it. I mean… look at what people who are willfully ignorant and/or intentionally hateful have done to the west. They’re still saying shit like “better work harder, scrub” even though that’s complete bullshit and applies just as much to them as anyone else.

City Life@beehaw.org•Lessons from Tokyo: the world's largest city is car free
5·7 months agoThe title is solid clickbait (it’s not actually 100% car-free, duh) but I can forgive it considering the reality of living in Tokyo. I have a couple friends that have been there for a while, and while they haven’t kicked the US car-brain sickness completely they’ve had to admit it’s easier to go most places without one.

LGBTQ+@beehaw.org•Grocery co-ops pledge over $28,000 to Twin Cities Pride after Target was uninvited
12·9 months agoSupport your local co-ops! Glad to see they were able to step in and help.
Target c-suite can generally go eat a urinal cake. Not that I ever really shopped there anyway but after they caved to bigots they went up there with freddies/kroger and amazon on my shit list.
Also sorry for the rant in advance: I wish small grocers were more fairly prioritized in general. Here in Portland we do have a few and I’m lucky enough to be kind of near one, but some areas are completely out of luck. Even the ones we do have tend to cut a fine line on prices due to how crazy jacked up properly values and rents are. Trash single fam and large business zoning rules are really blocking a lot of progress.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Forklift drivers, what's one thing that you've done by accident that's always stuck with you since it happened?
0·10 months agoNot verifying the load capacity of a customers vehicle.
My past job made the customer sign off the paperwork before we loaded them up and this guy did sign off on the paperwork that his truck could take the load. So, I wasn’t technically liable. I was newly certified and was the only driver around that day. We were a small shop that only took a few deliveries a week, and customers wanting samples back after delivery was even rarer (destructive testing is fun!).
Since I was new to this, I didn’t intuitively know the difference between a flatbed and a normal passenger pickup. So yeah. In my ignorance and with this guy’s sign-off in hand, I try to load his ~1000lb pallet of bigass metal test samples into his. Personal. Pickup.
The truck just kept squatting and squatting, even though I still had weight on the forks… until it finally made a horrific creaking noise. I immediately unloaded the pallet and went to apologize. The guy was mortified but he kept it cool and called his actual delivery guy to come with a flatbed the next day. I did that one too, thankfully his delivery guy just cracked up when I explained what happened (even gave me some quick advice too!). They kept doing business with us, at least, but his reaction in that moment is still seared into my mind.
For those unaware: -196°C (-320°F) is the approximate boiling point of liquid nitrogen. Call it creative marketing I guess!
And yes I used to do lots of charpy impact testing hence that knowledge is engraved in my brain forever. DBTT gaaang

Process affinity for literally anything else is determined by adhd rolling a d20, the result is your one and only process thread for the next 5 minutes unless it rolls a nat 1 then you get 16 for 5 mins. Also you’d better hope the result isnt 17-20 cause if it is that shits soooo goooone lol
I have a foot pedal button assigned to mute my microphone.
(And no, I don’t stream or anything, purely a QoL thing 😆)
Oof, yeah I’m pretty picky about some keybinds and games that lock down keys can be almost unplayable.
Helldivers 2 doesn’t let you remap interact to F (which is the only muscle memory interact key I can use) and I haaaaate that so much. I had to get a workaround just to fix it.
Hmmm, for some reason the first thing I thought of was “www.customgiantdildos would sound better than www.giantcustomdildos because of how the words flow.”

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•Carbrained problems in narrow (wide) streets at the edge of suburban sprawl
4·1 year ago“I’ve got in two fights before”
Excuse me? Over what, having to yield for 10 seconds to someone else? Fucking children.
Try living in an older section of my city, where all residential roads are all effectively narrower than these NIMBY childcare center candidates are whining about. Forget getting in a fight, yielding and learning how to negotiate with cars, bikes, peds, and muni vehicles is called life. If you get upset about it here you’re clearly not a native to city life, and it shows.
Yet another victory for manged ☆queeromacy☆
Ah shit, that reminds me I need to go get killed by the airstrikes of internet randos in helldivers again. 10/10 game

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•Innovation makes useful things smaller - overconsumption makes them bigger and more meaningless
15·1 year agoIt doesn’t help that carmakers get incentivised to go big by fucked up fuel standards. Here in the US the CAFE standards were gutted during their creation to carve out looser standards for obese pickups and hummer-sized SUVs. The bigger they get even within a given segment, the less stringent the requirements are.
https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/24139147/suvs-trucks-popularity-federal-policy-pollution
Plus people “feel safer” and all that other jazz when they drive them. It’s just… It’s so stupid to have to watch people continuing to chose shit like this.
IMO it’s such a multi-faceted problem that at this point about the only thing that makes sense is to switch lanes (heh) and focus on other transit methods. More people will take transit or bike if it’s easier than parking their mile long farm vehicles in tight urban spaces and being helplessly fumigated by standstill traffic.

Great, yet another case of: we want to build cars but “nobody” (a.k.a. everybody except piece of shit investors) wants reliable and inexpensive cars that aren’t spying on you.
So we need to unlock money from venture capital / rabid ai hype / insert sketchy bubble here, to build expensive luxury cars with fake self driving while selling all your data completely outside of your control.
