7·6 months agoIt’s not always takedowns either, just the developer deciding to nuke their own repos. Real annoying, although it’s making me more vigilant about forking/mirroring important repos.

World News@lemmy.world•Ultra-processed food increases risk of early death, international study findsEnglish
13·6 months agoIs there a link to the actual study? The American Journal link seems to be a different one, and that one has a massive list of types of items classified as UPF (check Appendix A, Table 1), so it’s hard to identify what the causal factor(s) are.

Australia@aussie.zone•A minority Labor government could be truly progressive – and the conservatives know it | Lenore TaylorEnglish
7·7 months agoThere’s often this revisionist history about things as well. Labor wouldn’t negotiate with the Greens over the original ETS, and the Greens get blamed for it not passing. Only a few years later they work together and make a better policy (the carbon price). Abbott comes in and tears it up. Current Labor supporters either conveniently forget this ever happened, or they somehow argue that Abbott would have teared up the carbon price but not the ETS.

431·7 months agoI think there’s room for both, as in the old days there was typically an IRC channel along side forums that was typically a secondary channel (but not always).
But yeah, forums would be ideal, preferably with federation support so there is no need to make an account with every single one.

Australia@aussie.zone•A minority Labor government could be truly progressive – and the conservatives know it | Lenore TaylorEnglish
7·7 months agoThe false dichotomy rhetoric of “they’re better than the other party” is just insufferable, and the US has shown us how the two-party duopoly plays out.
Just make sure you preference Labor ahead of the Coalition. That’s the risk of “both sides” rhetoric, although I would hope that most people here understand this.
Investigate your candidates.
Agreed. The guardian have a short summary on the minor parties although it could stand to take slightly more of an opinion on some of the parties.

3·7 months agoChina aren’t really known for dirt cheap labour anymore because they are mostly doing what the West is doing, which is offloading their labour to even poorer countries in South-East Asia and other developing countries.
Which doesn’t really change the equation overall, of course.

Linux@lemmy.world•Looking Glass Update! MASSIVE VFIO Breakthrough Incoming! - YouTubeEnglish
3·7 months agoCool, but the title is a big oversell.
LookingGlass basically added a pretty fast software renderer for Windows guests. Which is nice, because it’s a pretty slick interface and works better than many of the alternatives, but it probably isn’t useful for gaming.
The main strength of LookingGlass is for GPU passthrough setups, and this new feature doesn’t seem to be relevant for that. I’d say the stuff happening with Venus and native-context on Linux guests is more interesting (if quite new) since it doesn’t rely on a second GPU.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does it seem like so many (young) men these days flock over to types like Andrew Tate?
4·7 months agoIt differs by Western country at least as well. Australian Gen Z men for instance are shifting left, just not as quickly as women.
To be honest, the whole narrative about Gen Z is overly focused on men, and the seismic shift of Gen Z women to the left should not be ignored. But belittling and undermining the views of young women is certainly not a new thing.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Trump may soon offer a motherhood medal, an idea popularized in Nazi GermanyEnglish
19·7 months agoHonestly, we need to reform our economic system and not continually rely on fertility to solve all of our problems.
I’ll add that even those incentives probably won’t help, as fertility declines are strongly associated with education levels and money (and women’s liberation in particular). Give women options and unsurprisingly, some will choose not to have children.

politics @lemmy.world•Larry David's response to Bill Maher's meeting with Trump
29·7 months agoThat one really got me. Göring, with his mouth full, asked what was so funny, and Hitler said, “I was just telling him about the time my dog had diarrhea in the Reichstag.” Göring remembered. How could he forget? He loved that story, especially the part where Hitler shot the dog before it got back into the car.
Funny and fitting, given Kristi Noem’s history of killing dogs.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What popular TV show did not do it for you and you quit watching?
11·7 months agoI watched it for a while, but it just got stupider and stupider with every season. It’s a very American show, and it feels like conservative pandering much of the time (even though the show runner isn’t a conservative from what I hear).
Interesting, which electorate? I redid the survey and got the same results (could be consistent with IP).
It’s possible to match with Palmer just because he’s throwing out a bunch of policies that might sound good but have no logical consistency or anything backing it. Probably the survey should account for that if it isn’t already.
In any case, you can select your own preferences and build your own paper, which is the main reason I posted it. Ideally it would let you skip the survey process too, particularly since it requires an email at the end (I used a throwaway).
